SNOW!

In EnvOE 9 We:
  • Had a presentation by Avalanche Canada about safety and avalanches.  What did you learn?  How does this change your your trip planning.
  • Did some cooperative games.  How did it go?  How was it communicating without talking?  Why might that skill be important?
  • Reviewed HOTTEA.
  • Examined extreme survival skills based on the events of 127 Hours.  This is the story of Aron Ralston.  An outdoor enthusiast.  What did you learn from this story?  How would HOTTEA have helped Aron?

Fall is Here

Last Week in EnvOE 9 We:

  • Did cooperative games outside.  Worked with each other to play Disc Golf and develop a rules system that worked for our class.
  • Investigated Biological Diversity.  Read a SHORT article, answered a few questions, handed it in.  These have been assessed and results are in PowerSchool.
Coming Up:
  • The weather is changing.  We will still go outside.  Please dress appropriately.
  • Avalanche Canada will be doing an Avalanche Safety talk with us on Thursday.

Happy Fall Break!

In EnvOE 9 we have been working on:

  • The concept of Climate Change.  We watched, made observations from and completed an assignment on the documentary Six Degrees Could Change the World
  • Have you completed your Keep our School Beautiful Poster yet?


Coming up in EnvOE 9:

  • OUTDOOR WINTER ACTIVITY.  Winter is coming.  Be ready.

In EnvOE 9 we have been working on:

  • Cooperative games, such as Volcanos and Craters.  Why do we need to work cooperatively for outdoor pursuits and activities?
  • Studying the idea of Climate Change.
  • Watched Six Degrees Could Change the World and completed an assignment.  Noted that we did not need our personal technology for this kind of study.
  • Discussed how to dress appropriately for different types of weather and activities.


Coming Up:
  • More cooperative games.
  • Why planning for outdoor activity matters.
  • What are we doing to make our local environment better.
Reminder:  
  • Going outside is weather dependent.  How you are dressed affects the final decision.  We ALL go outside or we ALL stay inside.

Seasons Are Changing

This week in EnvOE 9 we:

  • Talked about how abiotic and biotic factors interact with each other in our school yard.  What is a rock doing to the grass?  For the Richardson Ground Squirrels?
  • Talked about how and why organisms conceal themselves.
  • Played Camouflage.  What does this game represent in nature?
  • How are producers, consumers, scavengers, etc. organised in nature?
  • Looked at Biological Diversity.  Talked about organisms adapt differently based on their environments.
  • Talked about advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction.
  • Worked on our "Keep our School Beautiful" posters.  When you have indoor time, you should work on them.

  • Predator-Prey 
  • Dressing for the activity
  • Trip planning

In EnvOE 9 We have been:

  • Identifying Biotic and Abiotic factors.
  • Observing what they do in our environment.
  • Used our environmental stewardship skills to clean up the school yard.
  • Used our communication skills to design and start to create a poster/start a campaign: Keep Our School Beautiful
  • Talked about planning a trip and being prepared.  What does this look like?  What steps can you take?
  • Played Camouflage.  Why do we do it?  What does it have to do with EnvOE?
Coming up:
  • Why do we look at making changes to our lifestyle to help the environment?
  • Can we work together to achieve a common goal outside?

Welcome to Environmental and Outdoor Education 9!


I am looking forward to working with you this year!

So far in EnvOE 9 we have:

  • made observations of our school yard 
  • recorded our observations on flip chart paper as a group
    • what made you happy about our school yard?
    • what made you sad about our school yard?
  • Reviewed HOTTEA to help support SAFE outdoor trip planning - Hazard, Objective, Team, Tell, Equipment, Alone
  • Discussed the difference between BIOTIC and ABIOTIC
  • Talked about Choose your own adventure days and participation in cooperative games.
